Have you ever wondered if the “natural is better” philosophy holds true for skin care? Finding the perfect potions for our skin can sometimes make us feel like mad scientists, scrutinising LONG lists of strange-sounding ingredients and testing different combinations! All that experimenting can get pretty confusing, (not to mention expensive!) and leave you feeling like you need a chemistry degree to separate the nasty chemicals from the nice ones. If this sounds familiar, this blog is for you.
What do we mean by ‘natural’ in the first place?
When we say ‘natural’ skincare, we’re referring to skincare products which are powered by botanicals, plant-derived extracts and gentle oils sourced from mother earth herself. This also means they don’t contain ingredients like parabens, sulphates, and artificial fragrances that can potentially irritate the skin and disrupt its delicate balance.
And yes, ‘natural’ is a pretty broad term! For example, poison ivy would be considered natural. However, this rash inducing, oily resin is certainly not something we’d want anywhere near our skin. Another natural example you’ll want to avoid is bergamot oil, which can make skin even more sun-sensitive. Hm, no thanks!
So while “natural” is not immediately synonymous with “safe”, when we are sensible and selective with the gifts that nature has to offer we are able to avoid many of the harms associated with synthetic chemicals, which we’ll explore below.
Why are chemicals in skincare harmful?
We all know how easy it is to come into contact with harsh chemicals these days. They’re common in the packaged foods we eat, cleaning products we use, the clothing we wear and even the air we breathe. And, of course, they’re also lurking in many conventional skincare products.
Artificial chemicals are those produced in a lab. One example is parabens – common preservatives found in chemically-based skincare which are used to deter mould and increase product shelf life. However, some studies have shown that these may affect our endocrine system, potentially messing with our hormones to cause fertility problems and increase our risk of certain cancers, such as breast cancer. Pretty scary stuff!
While parabens are currently FDA-approved as being safe for skin, there are still some unknowns when it comes to the long term harm that these may pose. In fact, the European Union has banned 5 parabens, all of which can be found in Australian skin care products, since as yet we haven’t banned any. So while the jury is still out, many experts in the skincare field (including us at Cannabella), are opting out of controversial preservatives and chemicals. After all, you can’t put a price on peace of mind!
