Stretch Marks | Skin Conditions | Cannabella

Tiger stripes, lightning stripes, stretchies; we’ve seen a bunch of cute names for stretch marks pop up over recent years, and we love how they normalise this incredibly common skin occurrence. Between 50-90% of women have them (and yes, men can get them too) so we reckon it’s high time they stopped being something to hide, and start being something we accept.

Health-wise, stretch marks are totally harmless, too. But we get it – sometimes people can feel self-conscious about the way stretch marks look and want to reduce their appearance. If that’s you, read on…

What causes stretch marks?

Stretch marks show up where skin has been stretched beyond its limit due to weight fluctuations. It’s a sign that the fine layer of dermis has torn, and healed itself with a fine scar.

Perhaps you’ll notice them during a period of weight gain, or due to one of these factors.

  • Pregnancy. If there’s anything that stretches the body (and mind) beyond the limits, it’s having kids! During pregnancy, the skin on your abdomen, hips, and thighs must stretch significantly to accommodate a growing child – cue, stretch marks.
  • Puberty. Stretch marks are more common during the teenage years, especially if you grow or develop during a short window of time.
  • Genes. Your genes also play a role, with some people’s skin being just naturally more prone to collecting ‘lightning stripes’.

How to get rid of stretch marks

Stretch marks are part of the wear and tear of life, so there’s no “cure” as such, but there are certainly ways to help them fade faster. These include…

  • Staying hydrated: Add ‘stretch mark healing’ to the long list of reasons why you should be drinking plenty of water. Good old H2O keeps your skin hydrated and plump, reducing the appearance of stretch marks.
  • Eat a balanced diet: Eating a diet rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as zinc and silica, can really help your skin stay healthy.
  • If natural methods aren’t enough, professional treatments like laser therapy, microdermabrasion, or chemical peels also exist – although they’re expensive and come with inherent risks including pain and even (in rare cases) scarring and infection.

Now, here’s our favourite method….

Apply La Tropica Body Serum to fight stretch marks

Developed to combat the damage of harsh sun exposure, La Tropica Body Serum is formulated to protect and fortify skin that has gone through some big changes, such as the skin stretching changes we might see in pregnancy or puberty. This is what makes this hemp body moisturiser so efficacious in fading surface level scars such as stretch marks.

What’s in the magic formula, you ask? The La Tropica Body Serum has a base of soothing Aloe Vera, which contains a high level of natural antioxidants and has powerful inflammatory properties. It’s also used to soothe burns (including sunburn) and irritated skin, so you know it’s gentle and refreshing for all skin types.

Of course, the star of the show is our holy grail ingredient, raw unfiltered Hemp Seed Oil. It has the capacity to speed up cell recovery, and is also known to increase the production of collagen, which strengthens skin and improves elasticity. Hemp Seed Oil is also a rich source of Chlorophyll which is great for soothing skin irritation and dryness. When your skin is properly moisturised and nourished, you’re not only treating current stretch marks. You’re also maximising your skin’s ability to stretch by improving elasticity which means you’re preventing future stretch marks before they even occur!

However, be patient, and don’t expect overnight results. Be consistent in applying the body serum over your stretch marks daily and you’ll notice improvements over time. Your skin will need a bit of TLC before it can begin repairing the signs of damage, especially if they’re stretch marks you’ve had for years.

Some application tips!

Massage: Massaging La Tropica Body Serum stretch mark affected areas feels great, plus improves circulation and promotes healing.

Exfoliate before applying: Regular exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover so stretch marks fade faster. If you exfoliate before applying your serum to slightly damp skin, the product can penetrate your skin’s surface more effectively.

So go ahead and indulge in this sublime smelling and dermis-hugging body serum, and feel refreshed and confident to rock the skin you’re in!

frequently asked questions

When people find out we own a natural skincare company, the first question they usually ask is ‘what is the best skin oil for me’? Of course, we’re only too glad to help, and always begin by discussing the person’s needs, skin type and any concerns they have in regards to their skin.

You see, there are a vast range of skin oils on the market, from pure, plant-powered blended oils like those in our own range, through to inferior formulas which are bulked out with cheap, inactive ingredients. There are also many skin types, skin issues and ailments, as well as allergens to take into account.  That’s why it’s important to analyse the ingredients, their benefits, any additives and what therapeutic value you can expect to gain from using that particular oil on your skin, before you go ahead and apply anything.

Within the Cannabella range, there are four skin oil treatments, each with a different – though in some instances overlapping – purpose and suitability. The first and simplest question is ‘where are you looking to apply your skin oil’? If you’re looking for a body oil to help nourish and smooth your skin, leaving it supple and smelling incredible, look no further than our La Tropica Body Oil. La Tropica is a heaven-scent blend of eleven different plant oils, including Unfiltered Hemp Oil, Watermelon Seed Oil, Camellia Oil and Jojoba Oil. It is also enriched with Caprylic triglyceride, which is made from combining Coconut Oil with glycerin.  This compound creates a barrier on the skin’s surface that reduces dryness by locking in moisture. La Tropica is suitable for all skin types, and is formulated to soften and hydrate dry and sunburned skin.

If you answered ‘face’ instead of body to our first question, we have a choice of three hydrating botanical facial oils for you, depending on what you’re after. If your skin is beginning to show the signs of ageing – fine lines, increased dryness, loss of elasticity – we recommend our Complex Q10 Serum. Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant which helps to boost collagen, fight free radicals, and reduce signs of aging in our skin. It’s something our bodies naturally produce to help with growth and maintenance, however we make less than we need as we grow older.  That’s where our serum – with its combination of Unfiltered Hemp Seed Oil, CoQ10, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C – can help. It’s specifically designed to address causes and symptoms of the aging process and start you on the path to nourished, glowing and more youthful-looking skin.

Aging not a concern for you? We recommend selecting between our Renewal, and Clarify serums.  These are both suitable for those for whom fine lines are yet to be a key concern. Clarify is our ultra-lightweight clarifying face serum, designed to help alleviate the symptoms of acne for those prone to breakouts. With the anti-inflammatory benefits of Hemp Seed Oil combined with anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory Turmeric and Sandalwood, our Clarify Serum is a product any acne sufferer should try for noticeable improvements. Finally, our award-winning Renewal Serum is an outstanding ‘all rounder’ when it comes to facial oil-based products. Nourishing, soothing and super-quenching, may help to reduce early signs of ageing and improve your skin’s elasticity, tone and texture.  Winner of the 2020 Cannabis Awards Product of the Year, this serum is form ulated with 14 different plant oils including (of course!) Hemp Seed Oil, Camellia Oil, Broccoli Seed Oil, Rosehip Oil and many more.  This is our best-selling product for a reason – it has delivered improvements to skin tone, elasticity, moisture levels and appearance for hundreds of devoted customers.

We hope this helped you to work out which is the best in oil for you! As with all skincare products, always ‘patch test’ a small quantity of the product somewhere not visible to ensure there are no unknown allergies or sensitivities before applying to your face.

Hemp Seed Oil for skincare is emerging as a powerhouse ingredient in the world of clean beauty. It’s a powerful botanical ingredient and a ‘green beauty’ hero – not only for clear, radiant skin, but also for the environment. Hemp crops help to promote a more sustainable world in many ways, including replenishing the soil as it grows.

Most traditional skincare products on the market are either petroleum-based (yes, the stuff you put in your car!) or full of hidden nasties, with unpronounceable pharmaceutical names. Many of these ingredients can do more harm to your health than good in the long run, which is why it is now more important than ever to turn our attention back to nature.

As an ingredient, Hemp Seed Oil for skincare offers unrivaled benefits. Recognised as one of nature’s most perfectly balanced oils, it contains ideal amounts of both the required essential fatty acids, which are great for long term human use. There are no other chemical combinations, nor plant-based sources that are able to match the natural benefits of hemp seed for skincare.

The best thing about using Hemp Seed Oil for skincare is that it doesn’t discriminate. It loves and thrives on any and all skin types; oily skin, dry skin, ageing and aged skin, damaged, inflamed and sore skin as well as psoriasis, rosacea, eczema and acne prone skin. Apply Hemp Seed Oil to any skin type and it will dedicate itself to healing, nourishing and working absolute wonders for your skin.

Cannabella skincare is packed full of antioxidants, omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, vitamin E, linoleic and oleic acids, and chlorophyll. With plenty of skin-loving vitamins to deliver the ultimate hydration, Hemp Seed Oil reigns supreme as a potent anti-aging agent. It will help to smooth-out fine lines and wrinkles, prevent signs of ageing, and regenerate and energise the skin’s protective layer. It can encourage new skin cell regeneration and will firm, tighten, brighten and repair stressed and dehydrated skin, while tirelessly combating those nasty free radicals!

Hemp Seed Oil skincare can easily replace your daily moisturiser, as it even has a UV protection factor of 6 – not enough for a full day in the summer sun, but plenty for brief periods in the sun such as a commute to work.

Try Hemp Seed Oil on your skin soon. It’s the perfect addition to your clean beauty regime!

We all get dry skin from time to time, but in winter especially, dry skin can become painful, cracked and peeling. It doesn’t feel great, it doesn’t look great, and it can be surprisingly difficult to treat.

Traditionally you would treat extremely dry and cracked skin with a cracked skin balm, an oil-based moisturiser or even lanolin or Sorbolene. Many commercial creams for extremely dry, cracked skin are full of chemical ingredients, including parabens.

Parabens are a chemical many people are looking to avoid these days, for good reason. Scientific studies suggest that parabens can disrupt hormones in the body and harm fertility and reproductive organs, affect birth outcomes, and increase the risk of cancer. https://www.ewg.org/what-are-parabens

This is where Cannabella Hemp Jelly comes in. Rich and soothing – yet light – our Hemp Jelly is free from petrochemicals and infused with Shea Butter and Beeswax, two aromatic ingredients which help skin draw in and retain moisture.

Cannabella Hemp Jelly is full of natural ingredients including fatty acids, Vitamin E and Vitamin A and of course, our hero ingredient, pure Hemp Seed Oil. This ‘green dream’ oil is high in Chlorophyll which means it also helps to inhibit bacteria growth on the skin.

The market for CBD Oil in Australia hasn’t yet reached the status of other multi-million dollar and billion-dollar markets like those in America and the United Kingdom. That is not slowing down the growth of CBD Oil in Australia, though. CBD in Australia stands for Center Business District, as we all know, but this isn’t the only thing that CBD stands for these days.

CBD Oil is also short for Cannabidiol, a phytocannabinoid produced by the cannabis plant and some hops varieties. The type of CBD Oil legal in Australia comes from a variety of cannabis known as hemp. Unlike its cousin plant used as a medical or recreational plant in parts of the world for its rich THC profile, industrial hemp contains little to no THC.

CBD Oil and THC Oil both come from the cannabis plant and have some similarities but are quite different. While both CBD and THC are helpful to many people in many ways, they have vastly different effects.

THC Oil is known for its intoxicating effects. THC levels in cannabis can range from 0.001% up to 46% in cannabis plants. The legal limits of THC in Australia start at 0.35% and go up to 1%, depending on the state you live in. THC has a reputation for causing giggles, red eyes, dry mouth, increased appetite, and for making consumers relaxed.

CBD Oil is not known to have any intoxicating effects. The effects of CBD Oil are said to be therapeutic, bringing relief from a plethora of symptoms and conditions. Consumers have reported CBD helping them with the symptoms of stress, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, menstrual cramps, skin conditions, and more.

It’s worth noting that CBD (or Cannibidiol) Oil is NOT the same ingredient that we use in our botanical skin formulations. Our hero ingredient is Unfiltered Hemp Seed Extract, or Hemp Oil, which (along with CBD Oil) is just one of over 100 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids found in the cannabis or marijuana plant.

Like Hemp Oil, CBD is a natural botanical remedy but there are important differences between the two ingredients, centred around their respective THC levels and how they’re produced. You can read more in our blog on the subject HERE.

CBD Oil may be just the thing your skin needs to help it regain its youthful, radiant appearance. It could also be what you’re looking for to find relief from pain, burning, flaking, itching, and other conditions that ravish the most neglected organ of our body.

Consumers around the globe are loving CBD Oil products. The CBD Oil market has quickly cultivated into a multi-billion-dollar one with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. CBD Oil and skincare seem to go hand in hand. CBD Oil has been reported to help with many different types of skin conditions.

In recent years, low-dose CBD has been approved as a Schedule 3 medicine here in Australia, which means it does not require a prescription but is only available from pharmacies. Just last year, the country’s biggest pharmacy chain, Chemist Warehouse, signed a deal to supply certain CBD products over the counter.

However, there’s a hitch. Right now, there are no CBD Oil products approved for sale in Australia by the ARTG. If and when they do approve products containing CBD Oil, they’re likely to be very low-grade, but they will be available in chemists.

As such, currently to legally use CBD Oil here, you need to be prescribed it by your doctor. Typically, this is to treat chronic pain, anxiety or insomnia.

CBD is not the cannabinoid (i.e. a compound naturally found in the cannabis or hemp plant) that you’re after if you’re looking to get high. THC – AKA tetrahydrocannabinol – is the one known for its psychoactive effects, producing a ‘high’ when consumed.

Neither Hemp Oil nor CBD cause a high like THC, though CBD can cause a very mild, calming or uplifting effect in higher doses.

Increasingly, scientists are proving the efficacy of CBD Oil in treating certain conditions. Without their research, there is little chance that Australia’s strict drug approval system would consider allowing CBD oil to be pharmaceutically available. Leading the way at this point is the clinical evidence for CBD oil in treating epilepsy – the first condition for which doctors can legally prescribe CBD oil in Australia.

Epilepsy Action Australia reports on a 2018 trial that “there was (a) 43.9% reduction of drop seizures in CBD group and 21.8% of the reduction in the people who were in the placebo group. Besides drop seizures, the frequency of other types of seizures was also reduced drastically which reflected a wide spectrum of effects of CBD in controlling different types of seizures.’1

Numerous studies have also been undertaken in the past 5 years to determine the efficacy of CBD Oil in treating anxiety and insomnia, with encouraging results. In a 2020 New Zealand study, 72 adults with anxiety or sleep problems were treated with CBD Oil. After the first 2 months of CBD treatment, 78.1 – 79.2% of participants reported improvements in anxiety symptoms, although between 15-20% reported symptoms worsening.

Clearly, further research needs to be conducted to determine optimal dosage and how CBD Oil works in combination with other therapies, but it’s promising that research continues to suggest that CBD Oil is safe, effective at treating a broad range of conditions, and with few side effects.

In spite of it’s 3,000+ years of use by humans, these days there’s a LOT of misinformation and confusion about the hemp plant, and exactly what hemp is used for. It’s probably safe to assume (since you’re here on our website!) that you’re aware that hemp seed extract is a highly effective ingredient in skin and beauty products, but there are many other ways this wonder plant benefits humankind.

We break it down for you into the uses, benefits and potentials for the humble hemp plant and ingredients derived from it. We love the groundswell of interest in our signature botanical, and can’t wait to see it crop up in more and more categories and products in the future.
